What Is Reiki

The word Reiki comes from two kanji, or Japanese characters used in writing: Rei (“spirit”) and Ki (“energy”), so literally the Japanese word Reiki can be defined as ‘spiritually guided life energy’ or ‘universal life force energy’. It is a natural Japanese energy healing system that is thousands of years old. Although originally used to assist spiritual development in Japan, today it is most commonly used throughout the world for “hands-on” healing. It is a holistic healing system, meaning that it treats the whole being, addressing problems and healing at all levels: physical, mental, emotional and spiritual. Along with other therapies, such as acupuncture, homeopathy, and Qi Gong, Reiki is part of the evolving field of energetic healing, renewed from the wisdom and knowledge of ancient cultures for use in today’s world. It is life energy that is guided by a Higher Power.

You do not have to believe or understand Reiki for it to work. Receiving the energy is a deeply relaxing experience that reduces stress while promoting feelings of calm, comfort, and well-being. Using only a very light touch to transmit energy through the palm chakras or no touch at all, the practitioner becomes a conduit of Divine healing energy, which is passed to the client. Since Reiki is pure energy it isn’t subject to the limitations of time and space. And as we are also made up of and connected by energy, the healing energy can travel across a building, an entire community, another continent, or to the past or future. The scientific community accepted Einstein’s Theory of Relativity and acknowledged that space and time are relative, not absolute concepts. Eventually, when scientists will be able to clarify how energy travels across time and space they will be able to explain Reiki in logical, comprehensive terms.

While Reiki is spiritual in nature, it is not affiliated with any religion; there is no belief system attached. It can never do harm; it is always beneficial and works to improve the effectiveness of all other types of therapy. The nature of Reiki is perfect harmony and balance, so it always finds the origin of health problems and works for the highest good. Reiki has been used in healing practically every known illness and injury including serious problems like multiple sclerosis, heart disease and cancer as well as anxiety, depression, insomnia, fatigue, joint and muscle pain, headaches, effects of chemotherapy, allergies, arthritis, addictions or asthma. It can also be used to maintain health and energetic balance in healthy beings and heal emotional and spiritual problems. Although elimination of symptoms is usually the eventual or immediate outcome, healing is best described as a return to greater wholeness and connection with our spiritual nature. Reiki is very helpful in easing the transition between life and death.

So what can you expect from a Reiki treatment? Relaxed and fully clothed, you either rest on a massage table or sit comfortably in a chair while the practitioner holds her hands on or above you. As the energy is spiritually guided, it flows to wherever it is needed. It can usually be felt as a tingling in the body or as a warm sensation. Depending on what is needed, a session usually lasts about 1 hour.

As mentioned earlier, Reiki energy helps to heal all living things. It brings about positive changes emotionally, mentally, physically and spiritually, providing deep relaxation and a sense of peace. As a healing system, its simple, non-invasive, gentle nature is combined with its powerful results. Reiki is practiced throughout the world, including at over 300 major hospitals and medical centers in the United States. Until recently, Reiki was available only to humans, but increasing numbers of Reiki practitioners are establishing practices devoted to animals.
